About the event
Is this the year you finally start writing, but you're not sure where to start? Do the dark winter days dampen your creativity and motivation? Maybe you struggle to get back into writing after time off over the holidays. Or perhaps you just want a few new tools to add to your writerly toolbox.
Start your creative year off right by embracing play and experimentation in your writing practice with Sparking Your Creativity. We'll engage in a wide variety of generative exercises and discussions that will get our creativity flowing and set us up with plenty of inspiration for the year ahead.
Whether you're an experienced writer or a complete novice, and no matter what kind of writing you do - this course will get you flexing your creative muscles.
Over four sessions of two hours each, through a wide variety of playful, expansive writing prompts and discussions, we will push our writing out of its usual patterns and reignite interest in our own writing while setting ourselves up with plenty of material to explore in the coming year.
Session 1 - Drawing from Lived Experience
We've all heard that we should 'write we you know' - but what does this mean? Our own experiences and memories can be an unending font of creative inspiration when we can keep them flowing. We'll create prompts and writing ideas from our own memories, associations and sensory impressions.
Session 2 - Experimenting with Genre
No matter what form or genre we usually write in, a great deal can be gained from exploring elements of magic, horror, space, and time travel. We'll look at how we can generate new possibilities, as well as interrogate our current reality, by implementing the 'unreal'.
Session 3 - Pushing Against Constraints
Although it may seem counterintuitive, putting strict constraints on our generative writing can push us to create material we never would have created without them. We'll use cut-ups, blackouts, lipograms and more to engage lateral connections and unearth unexpected starting places.
Session 4 - Expanding into Big Ideas
Developing bigger projects and ideas can seem daunting. But what if you could outline a novel, script, story or poetry collection in fifteen minutes? What kinds of universes and contexts might we create by getting really weird? We'll find fun and playful ways to approach big projects and expand our ideas of what's possible.
