About the event

Would you like to get your creativity jump started with fresh, inspiring writing prompts and ideas? Are you finally ready to start writing, but not sure how to get going? Does summer winding down dampen your creativity and motivation? Maybe you struggle to get back into writing after time off over the holidays. Or perhaps you just want a few new tools to add to your writerly toolbox.

Whether you're an experienced writer or a complete novice, and no matter what kind of writing you do - this course will get you flexing your creative muscles.

Over four sessions of two hours each, through a wide variety of playful, expansive writing prompts and discussions, we will push our writing out of its usual patterns and reignite interest in our writing projects, while setting ourselves up with plenty of material to explore throughout the autumn.

These four session Crash Courses allow intensive focus on particular areas of creative writing, without the financial or time commitments required of more traditional, longer courses, and university degree programmes.

All courses are built to allow individual participants to choose their level of engagement based on the amount of time and energy they have to devote to the materials.

Session 1 - Drawing from Lived Experience

We've all heard that we should 'write we you know' - but what does this mean?  Our own experiences and memories can be an unending font of creative inspiration, when we can keep it flowing. We'll create prompts and writing ideas from our own memories, associations and sensory impressions.

Session 2 - Experimenting with Genre

No matter what form or genre we usually write in, a great deal can be gained from exploring elements of magic, horror, space, and time travel. We'll look at how we can generate new possibilities, as well as interrogate our current reality, by implementing the 'unreal'.

Session 3 - Pushing Against Constraints

Although it may seem counterintuitive, putting strict constraints on our generative writing can push us to create material we never would have created without them. We'll use cut-ups, black outs, lipograms and more to engage lateral connections and unearth unexpected starting places.

Session 4 - Expanding into Big Ideas

Developing bigger projects and ideas can seem daunting. But what if you could outline a novel, script, story or poetry collection, in fifteen minutes? What kinds of universes and contexts might we create by getting really weird? We'll find fun and playful ways to approach big projects, and expand our ideas of what's possible.

There will be one free scholarship place available as standard. This is available on a first come, first served basis with no requirment to disclose financial or personal information. Contact me directly to take up this place (krmoorhead.lit@gmail.com).

Please note that sessions will be recorded and shared with ticket holders, along with all course materials. Therefore you do not need to be able to attend all (or any) of the sessions live, in order to sign-up. Refunds will be considered on a case by case basis, but as above, if you are unable to attend live, you will still have access to the sessions.

All courses are neurodivergent, disabled, chronically ill, and trans* centred.
